Guitar Building Workshop 2018

Build your own quality, handmade electric guitar with guaranteed results, and gain the skills and knowledge to craft your own working instruments with minimal tools in almost ANY workshop.

We will cover the following:

​

  • Foundational knowledge on best practices and fundamental concepts.  

  • Layout and routing skills.

  • How to choose quality timbers.

  • Neck and body construction from raw timbers.

  • Basic set ups and essential fretwork.

  • Wiring.

  • Simple finish work that does not require a spraybooth set up.

The class begins August 20, 2016 and will be held at the home of BA Ferguson Guitars, Frets & Necks SC Guitar Specialty and Lutherie.  Your teachers will be Boot Arreola (owner and head

luthier at BAF), Brian Smith (BAF's production manager and Unitas creator), and Scott Roberts (luthier and repair shop manager).  Courses will take place every Saturday from 1:30 PM until 6 PM and refreshments will be provided.  There will be several weeknight "catch up" dates designated in case you want to spend a little more time on some details or have to miss a Saturday.

The price of the class varies depending on the style of electric guitar you want to build.  The price includes all timbers, hardware, electronics, pick-ups, finishing materials, etc.  There are 3 tiers available based on desired difficulty:

  • Tier 1 - T-Style bolt-on neck guitar.  This course will cover making your body from scratch, but will have a partially prefabricated neck with paddle shaped headstock.  You may wind up finishing your guitar sooner in this tier as a result.  This class will also cover body construction, set up and recrown basics, finishing, wiring, and is great if the thought of crafting a neck is a little daunting.  The guitar will be crafted with an alder body, maple neck with choice of rosewood, ebony or maple fretboard.  You can choose just about any dual pickup configuration.  A third pick-up will cost an additional $60.  The price for this course is $1649.

  • Tier 2 - T-Style bolt-on neck guitar.  This course covers all of the above and will also include neck construction, shaping, and fretting basics.  The price for this course is $1799.

  • Tier 3 - LP Jr styled guitar.  This course covers all the above, but instead of bolt-on construction, this guitar will be set neck.  The timbers will be mahogany for the neck and body and your choice of rosewood or ebony fretboard.  The price for this course is $1999.

This is a group class with only 5 slots available.  This will ensure for good, quality, hands on teaching.  Here's how to join:

Step 1 - Fill out the simple registration form below, choose your desired tier, then submit it.

Step 2 - Next to the registration form is a secure PayPal "Buy Now" button.  To reserve your space, a $599 deposit is required.  This is deducted from the total cost of the class.  The remainder is due on August 20th, when the class starts.

Step 3 - We will then email you a spec shee regarding the details of your build.  This is where you get to customize the color and pickup configuration.  Once you return the specs to us, we will have all the materials here and ready on August 20th so you can build your very own handmade guitar!
